Carolina Classic at Colleton River Plantation – Tour Preview

The International Junior Golf Tour will be in Bluffton, S.C. on January 25-26, 2014 for the Carolina Classic at Colleton River Plantation. The tournament will be hosted by the Pete Dye Course at Colleton River. The IJGT and Colleton River have teamed up for numerous successful tournaments in the past, including the Shootout at Colleton River Plantation on February 9-10, 2013. The field will be competing for IJGT Merit Points and national rankings.

Pete Dye called his course at Colleton River Plantation, “The best course I have ever built,” a telling statement considering Dye also constructed prestigious courses such as TPC Sawgrass, Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course, and Whistling Straits.  It is the only links-style course of its kind in the Southeast, featuring views of the Atlantic Ocean and Port Royal Sound on 11 holes. The course has been ranked in the “Top 100” courses by GolfWeek and “Top 100 Greatest Courses in the U.S.,” by Golf Magazine. Defining the course are small, undulating greens protected by pot bunkers. In July of 2015, the Pete Dye Course at Colleton River will host the 68th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. The course was also selected to be the location of many of the iconic and pivotal scenes of the movie, The Legend of Bagger Vance.

Keep an eye on Matthew Bastian of Media, Pa., Tyler Pidduck of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Nicholas Russell of Hilton Head Island, S.C. All three players have multiple top-10 finishes this season but have not been able to capture an IJGT victory. They’ll look to change their luck at Dye’s masterful layout.

Jasmine Chee of Hong Kong, China, Kayla Kozak of Bluffton, S.C., and Cake Phuchanbanchob are part of a strong field in the Girls Division. Chee has finished top-10 in all six IJGT Events she has competed in this season. Kozak has four top-10 finishes this season, including a 2nd place finish at the IJGT Junior at Oyster Reef in July. Phuchanbanchob captured the Bluffton Junior at Hampton Hall on Dec. 7-8 with an impressive even-par performance for the two-day tournament.

The Boys 14 & Under Division will see the likes of Takafumi Shimoji of Okinawa, Japan, who is coming off a win at the Aiken Junior at Woodside Plantation on Sept. 21-22. Xiaofeng Hu of Qiang Dao, China, and Luis Sanchez of Xalapa, Mexico, are also players to watch, as both have placed in the Top-10 at two events this season.
