The IJGT Summer Series continued to heat up as the Summer Series at Olde Stonewall took place July 8-9, 2014, in Ellwood City, Pa., and the Summer Series at Oyster Reef took place July 11-12, 2014, in Hilton Head, S.C. Both events featured juniors from numerous countries and states. As chosen by the fans, Matthew Barto of Leechburg, Pa., and Yu Lun Huang of Taiwan, are both featured in this week’s IJGT Photo of the Week.

In the northeast, Barto nabbed first in the Boys 15-19 Division at Olde Stonewall. His scores of 71-74–145 overall was eight strokes ahead of the competition. Barto’s round was highlighted by 11 pars and two birdies.

In the southeast, despite the tournament being cut short because of inclement weather, Huang’s first round score was enough to finish first in a tiebreaker. A birdie on the par-5 No. 2 was the hole that determined her victory over Nicole Lu who also tallied a score of 74. Huang was in Hilton Head to train with the IJGA and the event at Oyster Reef was her first IJGT event.

Congratulations to both Barto and Huang and we look forward to seeing them both again in future tournaments!

Plis wins second consecutive Summer Series event

The IJGT continued the Summer Series as it hosted the Summer Series at Oyster Reef Golf Club on July 11, 2014. The two-day, 36-hole event was cut short due to severe thunderstorms and heavy rains. Winners were announced on July 12, 2014, and based on round one scores. Twenty juniors competed for national rankings and eight juniors competed in a 9-hole Discovery Tour competition.

DSC_0714IJGT newcomer Justin Lewis of High Point, N.C., was victorious in the Boys 15-19 Division. Finishing with a score of 1-over-par 73, Lewis took first with a two-stroke lead. His score was the lowest score among the male competitors, earning him the Clazic Belts Low Round Award, the award provided to the boy and girl with the lowest score for the round. Lewis carded par or better on 11 straight holes, two of which were birdies, en route to his victory.

In a tie for second, Kyle Vance of Audubon, Pa., and Hsin-Wei Wu of Taiwan, both carded 3-over-par scores of 75 to complete the winner’s circle. The second-place finish was the first top-three finish for Vance and the first-ever IJGT event for Wu.

“I feels good to win, the course was great,” Lewis said in reference to his first experience with the IJGT.

DSC_0708For the second-consecutive Summer Series event, Dylan Plis of Camillus, N.Y., won the Boys 14 & Under Division. Carding a score of 76, Plis finished six strokes ahead of his competition. The highlight of his round being the back nine, Plis tallied four pars and two birdies as he made his way to victory. Plis also finished first at the Summer Series at Ridgemont Country Club on July 1-2, 2014, where he posted scores of 78-78 – 156 overall. This is his eighth top-10 finish of the season.

Finishing in second was Thomas Lipowicz of Alexandria, Va., with a score of 82. Rounding out the top three was Mason Cord of Des Moines, Iowa, with a score of 93.

“It feels really good to win two events in a row, I am excited for Buffalo,” said Plis who will compete in the Summer Series at Glen Oak Golf Course on July 15-16, 2014.

DSC_0711The Girls Division was won in a tiebreaker determined by the best score on the hardest handicap hole. Yu-Lun Huang beat out fellow Taiwan native, Nicole Lu thanks to a birdie on No. 2. Both Huang and Lu posted 2-over-par scores of 74 for the round. Huang carded three birdies, the most of any junior in the tournament, while Lu added one of her own as she finished in second. Both Huang and Lu were recipients of the Clazic Belts Low Round Award. Rounding out the top three was Ling-Jie Chen of Taiwan, with a score of 76.

“I felt much more relaxed playing here than in Taiwan and I really like that,” said Huang.
