Thanksgiving Day Classic at TPC Sawgrass

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) will be back for the 4th straight year at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, F.L. This year’s Thanksgiving Day Classic at TPC Sawgrass will take place on November 29- December 1, 2013 and will consist of three rounds of play on both the Valley and Stadium courses. Junior golfers every year are excited to play on one of the most difficult and well-known courses in the world.

TPC Sawgrass 17TPC Sawgrass’ acclaimed view is the 17th hole. This hole is known as the “Island Green”. The hole is only 132 yards from the tee box to the green, but the green is only 78 feet wide and is completely surrounded by water. Since 2003, over 4,300 rounds of golf have been played and no one has sunk a hole-in-one. This hole was not intended to become an island, according to the TPC Sawgass website, but was forced to after the construction of other holes needed the soil and sand that was surrounded the entirety of the hole.

The Stadium Course, designed by Peter Dye, has an abundance of par-3s, par-4s, par-5, and doglegs. It also is laid out so that while playing, you never play the same direction back-to-back on a hole. The Valley Course was opened 7 years later in 1987 and is scheduled to host the TOUR Championship on July 11, 2013. It is known for its perfectly manicured surfaces and water on every hole, Dye’s Valley was ranked No. 24 in Golfweek’s 2011 rankings of “Best Courses You Can Play” in Florida. The Valley Course is designed for both the seasonal and casual golfer and has enough challenging aspects for both.

Last year at the AB Golf Designs Thanksgiving Day Class at TPC Sawgrass, Aaron Terrazas won the Boys 15-19 by an impressive 3 strokes, shooting par for the first two rounds. Aaron shot par on 79.6% of the 54 holes. He did not hit many birdies or eagles, but was extremely consistent throughout the three days. He understood and studied the courses during the practice rounds and combined that with his consistent play for a victory. Aaron just qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur on June 11, 2013 at the Memorial park Golf Course in Houston Texas.

In the Girls Division Phimnipha Wongwaiwate  also finished in a similar fashion winning by 3 strokes and finishing with par on 74.1% of the 54 holes played during the tournament. She was able to move up the leader boards by leading with her par-5 performances where she averaged 4.75 stokes on each par 5.
