Thanksgiving Day Classic at TPC Sawgrass – Final results (Nov. 29, 2014)

Luo wins the Thanksgiving Day Classic in a come-from-behind effort
A hole-in-one highlights Larcelet’s first-ever IJGT win

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The IJGT hosted the annual Thanksgiving Day Classic over the holiday weekend at TPC Sawgrass, the home of the PLAYERS Championship. The three-day event was held on November 27-29, 2014, and took place on both the Dye’s Valley and THE PLAYERS Stadium courses. More than 85 juniors competed for national rankings and IJGT merit points.

Luo-cropXue Wen Luo of Haikou, China, won the Boys 15-19 Division in a come-from-behind effort. Luo’s 74 and 75 in the first two rounds had him trailing divisional leaders but still in the hunt. In his best performance of the weekend, Luo improved on his round-two score to close the tournament with an even-par 72 and moved into first with a three-day total 221. Luo began the tournament with momentum, stringing together seven consecutive pars before carding an eagle on the par-5 No. 8 of the Valley Course. Despite seeing a few bogeys in round two, Luo countered with three birdies to keep him in the running. Finishing strong, Luo aimed for consistency and used three birdies to finish the tournament with a 2-under back nine.

“My focus coming into today was to stay calm and play my own game,” said Luo.

Luo’s score of 72 in the final round earned him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award, the award presented to the male and female juniors to card the lowest score in the final round of the event.

In second was Ben Albin of Santa Fe, N.M., with scores of 77-70-78 to finish with a tournament total 225. Sharing third was Shiso Go of Kanagawa, Japan, and Sam Ohno of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The pair finished with tournament totals of 227.

Charles Larcelet copyIn his first IJGT event of his career, Charles Larcelet of Geraudot, France, controlled the Boys 14 & Under all the way to victory. Combining scores of 77-73-80 for a total of 230, Larcelet finished a staggering 16 strokes ahead of the division. He opened with consistency by carding 13 pars. Moving on to his best round of the tournament, Larcelet birdied the par-5 No. 1 before going on to record the first hole-in-one of the tournament on the par-3 No. 14 for eagle. Thanks to the lead he generated in the first two rounds, a struggle with bogeys was not enough to derail Larcelet’s route to victory.

“I was stressed going into today but happy overall with my performance,” said Larcelet.

Rounding out the top three for the Boys 14 & Under Division was Dong Jin Park of Seoul, in second and Alex Whitehead of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., in third. Park finished with a total 246 and Whitehead finished with a total of 250.

Yunjie Zhang copyYunjie Zhang of Haikou City, China, was victorious in the Girls Division. After round one, she shared the lead but consistent performances in rounds two and three allowed her to pull ahead and take a commanding eight-stroke lead for the win. Three birdies in round one helped Zhang to a 3-over 75 to share the lead with Chomachana “Cake” Phuchanbanchob of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Zhang improved by three strokes in round two after scoring par or better on 17 of 18 holes and took control of the division with her second round score of even-par 72. Four more birdies highlighted a second even-par performance to keep Zhang in first with a three-day total of 219.

“I was nervous on the range but birdies three of the first four holes and that calmed me down,” said Zhang.

The Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for the girls went to both Zhang and Bunyaporn “Nat” Zeng of Bangkok, Thailand, for their even-par scores of 72 in the third and final round.

Zeng finished in second with a tournament-total 227 while Phuchanbanchob finished third with a total 231.

Chandler McDowell of Alberta, Canada, also recorded a hole-in-one on the par-3 No. 8 of the Stadium Course.

The IJGT will continue tournament play on December 6-7, 2014, for the Savannah Junior at The Landings. To sign up for this event, or others, visit www.IJGT.com or call (843) 686-1500.
