Upstate Challenge at Brook Lea Country Club – Final Results (Sept. 28, 2014)

Reichert shoots even par for the tournament win
Braman nabs second consecutive top-three finish

The IJGT hosted the Upstate Challenge at Brook Lea Country Club on September 27-28, 2014. The event was the fourth tournament of the Northeast Tour with juniors competing for IJGT merit points and national rankings.

ReichertBen Reichert of East Amherst, N.Y., shot even-par 144 to win the tournament in the Boys 15-19 Division. Reichert shot one-under-par on the front nine of the opening round, including a chip in eagle on the par-5 No. 7.  He carded 25 total pars to set the pace for his even par for the tournament, closing out with four straight.

Reichert had a game plan to close out the final round, “My mindset was to hit good shots all days and I knew if I did that I would put myself in a good place”, said the champion.

Colin Dubnik from Rochester, N.Y., also recorded an even-par second round as he battled to close the gap on Reichert. Dubnik gained on Reichert’s lead by shooting 2-under-par on his second round front nine but struggled with a few bogeys preventing him from moving into the lead. Rounding out the top-three in the division was a three-way tie between Sean Stanistreet of Camillus, N.Y., David Hanes of Elma, N.Y., and Brad Belote of Lancaster, N.Y. The trio scored two-day totals of 152.

kellyPatrick Kelly of Erie, Pa., took the first place trophy home in the Boys 14 & Under Division.  His opening round of 80 led the group, and he carried his lead through the end after scoring 78 in round two. Kelly recorded three birdies and seven pars in both rounds.

When asked what the keys to his success were, Kelly said, “My ball striking and hitting a lot of fairways.”

TJ Buck of Penfield, N.Y., finished in second with a two-day total of 161 and Jeremy Summerson of Victor, N.Y., took third with a tournament total 166.

 

 

braman1In the Girls Divison, Madison Braman of Loudonville, N.Y., finished in first place with a total of 158. Braman led from the start and carried her momenutm through the finish. The first place finish becomes her second consecutive top-three finish. Her performance was highlighted by a total of six birdies and 16 pars.

“I play on an all boys team for high school and that competition has helped me improved my game and helped me play well in these tournaments,” said Braman. In second place, was Caroline Yarnall from East Aurora, N.Y., with a tournament total 158.
