Local Standout Steps Into Winners Circle Again at Dolphin Head
Jonathan Griz continues his big Spring with a victory at Lowcountry Championship
Hilton Head Island, SC: The International Junior Golf Tour returned to its official “home-base” over the weekend with the playing of the Lowcountry Championship at Dolphin Head Golf Club. The Gary Player design is a favorite amongst local players and players from area golf academies as players from 20 different countries represented the tournament field. Players this weekend had the opportunity to compete for national golf rankings, as well as IJGT Merit Points as a final tune-up event before the annual end of season celebration at Grand Cypress, with the playing of the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Championship.
For competition in the Boys 15-19 Division, local standout Jonathan Griz was able to complete the wire-to-wire victory over the weekend with a remarkable final round on Sunday. The Hilton Head native shot a 4-under par (68) on Sunday to pair with his opening round score of 1-under par (71) to complete his weekend with a score of 139.
This is the second victory of the Spring season for Griz, as he took home top honors of the South Carolina Open at Crescent Pointe GC.
Following closely in second-place is Alex Lamarca of Westwood, NJ. Lamarca, a current student at the International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA), played well all weekend with scores of 72 and 71 rounding out to a 143 total score. Finishing in a tie for third-place is J.D. Patterson and Leo Hernandez. Patterson, another local product from nearby Bluffton, SC, put together rounds of 75 and 74 for a total of 149. Hernandez, a current student at IJGA finished the weekend with rounds of 73 and 76 for 149 as well. Hernandez has signed a letter-of-intent to play college golf at Newberry College in the Fall.
In the Girls Division, Maria Fernanda Sosa was able to make a remarkable comeback to earn herself top honors as winner of the weekend at Dolphin Head. Sosa, a resident of Monterrey, Mexico and current student of the Junior Players Golf Academy (JPGA) put together an impressive final round of 74 to go with her opening round of 83. Sosa finished with a total score of 157.
Claiming second-place for the weekend is Ally Buchanan of Athens, GA. Buchanan, who is also a current student at JPGA, put together solid rounds of 78 and 88 for her weekend total of 166. Rounding out the top three is Sae Saito. Saito is currently a student at IJGA by way of Tokyo, Japan and ended her weekends shooting scores of 83 and 84.
Claiming his first victory in the Boys 14 & Under category is Muhamad Izwan Zaini of Seri Kembangan, Malaysia. The current student of IJGA has been very consistent all spring with multiple top-three finishes, and gets his first IJGT victory at Dolphin Head after scores of 88 and an impressive 75 on Sunday. Izwan Zaini finished with a total score of 163.
Finishing in second-place is Zaid Khan of El Dorado Hills, CA. Khan continues his impressive Spring season play after consecutive rounds of 82 for a 164 finish. Rounding out the top three is Harrison Freeze, of Plano, TX. Freeze, a current student of Bishops Gate Golf Academy (BGGA) finished the weekend with scores of 82 and 83 for his 165 total finish.
The IJGT will resume play once again during Memorial Day weekend with its annual end of season celebration at Grand Cypress for the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions. The event will include the awards for Players of the Year in each division, along with recognizing the best moments of the 2017-2018 season.
