2019 student from South Korea shoots 61 Saturday to cruise his way into Faldo Grand Final
Savannah, GA: The International Junior Golf Tour hosted its first Faldo Series Qualifying event of 2018 as the Club at Savannah Harbor played host to the IJGT Georgia Open. Over 100 juniors from 15 different states, and over 20 countries gathered in Savannah earn spots into the Faldo Series U.S. Grand Final, along with AJGA Performance Stars and other national golf rankings.
With a big stage like this, it is always exciting to see players rise to the occasion and create moments that will be remembered forever. On Saturday, Dongjin Park had everyone watching, on his way to a record-setting performance that would eventually lead to victory Sunday afternoon.
Park, a 2019 grad from Seoul, South Korea who is a current student at Bishops Gate Golf Academy, shot an 11-under par opening round, followed by a 70 on Sunday for his two-round total of 131. The opening score of 61 from Park on Saturday, is an all-time low round during an IJGT event. Along with his victory, Park earns an invitation into the Faldo Series U.S. Grand Final at Bella Collina.
Finishing in the top-three in second-place is Ty Sullivan with a weekend total of 140 after rounds of 69 and 71. Sullivan is a former resident of Toronto, Canada. In third-place is Drew Mullins, of nearby Pawleys Island, SC. Mullins ended the weekend with a score of 143, after rounds of 72 and 71.
The Boys Division was not the only contests full of excitement, as the Girls Division winner was decided by a Sudden-death playoff. After one playoff hole, Jeongbin Shin secured her victory after making Par. A native of Seoul, South Korea, Shin put together scores of 74 and 76 over her weekend, earning her a 150-total score.
Following her closely and joining Shin on the playoff hole are Vivian Yen and Chiara Arya. Yen had a fantastic round Sunday after shooting even-par (72) to go with her 78 from Saturday’s round. Vivian is a native of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Chiara Arya also ties for second-place after her strong weekend. Arya, who hails from Jakarta, Indonesia, finished the weekend with scores of 76 and 74.
Rounding out the contests for the weekend is our Boys 14 & Under Division, which saw Nic Pevny able to go back-to-back with weekend wins. Pevny, of Aspen, CO earned scores of 74 and 77 to total 151. Coming in second-place in the weekend contest is Diego Sarraf. The student from Mexico City, Mexico earned scores of 78 and 76 to round out his weekend. Rounding out the top-three is Muhamad Izwan Zaini of Seri Kembangan, Malaysia. Zaini had a solid weekend outing as he finished with scores of 82 followed by a 76 Sunday.
