Strasheim Shines in Victory of the South Carolina Open
Trailing 2-Shots off the Leader before the Final Round, the Senior Standout goes Low for first IJGT Victory
Bluffton, SC: The International Junior Golf Tour kicked back into the Spring calendar and season with the playing of the South Carolina Open. The third event of the Spring Season was held at Crescent Pointe Golf Club in the beautiful Lowcountry of South Carolina, where juniors from across the country and internationally gathered to compete for IJGT Merit Points, National Rankings, and first-place finishers earning an automatic invite to the 2019 Faldo Series U.S. Grand Final.
The conditions and weather could not have been better over the weekend, however that still presented the great challenge at Crescent Pointe in its tough layout for scoring. In the Boys Under 19 Division, the top of the leaderboard was crowded heading into Sunday’s Round with multiple players within only a few shots of the lead.
Taking full advantage of the opportunity was Steven Strasheim of Bluffton, SC, by putting together a final round of 72 to claim his victory at the South Carolina Open. Strasheim, a Senior student at nearby International Junior Golf Academy (IJGA), paired the low-round 72 with an opening round 76 to finish at 6-over Par for the event. This is the first IJGT victory for Strasheim, who has given a verbal-commitment to play his college golf at New Mexico State University.
Rounding out the top-three in the Boys Under 19 Division in a two-way tie for second place is JeongJoo Kim and Oliver Paddon. Kim, of Yongin, South Korea and current student at IJGA, held the lead after the opening round with a score of 74, followed by an 81 on Sunday for a two round total of 155. Paddon, a native of Sydney, Australia and current student at the Junior Players Golf Academy of Hilton Head (JPGA), had an impressive weekend as well in his second-place finish. Paddon put together rounds of 78 and 77 for a total score of 155.
In the most highly contested event of the weekend, the Boys Under 16 Division was one to follow Sunday afternoon at Crescent Pointe Golf Club. Clutch shots, and big moments were a theme throughout the Final Round with our feature group.
Standing alone after the 36-holes of competition and a stellar Sunday showing is Henry Stone of Kennett Square, PA. Stone fired up a 74 on Sunday, to pair with his opening round of 81 for a total score of 155. This is Stone’s first IJGT victory of the season.
Finishing closely in second-place is Muhamad Zaini of Seri Kembangan, Malaysia. A current student at IJGA as well, Zaini battled back valiantly on Sunday afternoon, putting together a final round of 76 to pair with his opening 80 from Saturday. The two-round total for Zaini over the weekend was 156. Rounding out the top-three is Will Oliver III. The nearby native of Pooler, GA, Oliver III also battled into contention all weekend long. Finishing with rounds of 82 and 79, Oliver III finishes the weekend with a total score of 161.
In the final competition of the weekend, Fann Lehoczky claimed victory of the Girls Under 16 Division in her debut IJGT event at Crescent Pointe Golf Club. Lehoczky, a native of Budapest, Hungary, finishes off the weekend going wire-to-wire for her debut win, with scores of 73 and 79, two round total of 152.
Finishing in second-place for the Girls Under 16 Division is Pamas Abhiteachapan of Bangkok, Thailand. The current student of IJGA, Abhiteachapan shot scores of 99 and 101 to round out the weekend.
The IJGT ramps up the Spring schedule over the coming weeks, including opportunities for Faldo Qualifying. The next event on the schedule is the playing of the Faldo Series Philadelphia Championship at White Manor Country Club.
