Faldo Series Northeast Championship at Hershey CC Full Recap
Joshua Ryan and Mary Kate Norcross take home top-honors at Hershey; earn Invitation into Faldo Series U.S. Grand Final
Hershey, PA: The International Junior Golf Tour returned to a familiar venue over the weekend, as players gathered at Herhsey Country Club as playing of the Faldo Series Northeast Championship took center stage. Players from all over the Northeast region of the United States gathered at the “Sweetest Place on Earth” to earn a guaranteed spot into the Faldo Series U.S. Grand Final. Players were also competing for national rankings such as AJGA Performance Stars, Junior Golf Scoreboard and Golfweek rankings.
This being the sixth of eight qualifiers the IJGT has on schedule for 2018, 2 of the top Boys U-18 and U-16 finishers would earn an guaranteed spot in the Faldo Series U.S. Grand Final. The Faldo Series also extends invitation to two of the top Girls U-18 and U-16 finishers as well. The Faldo Series U.S. Grand Final will take place again at Bella Collina Golf Club in Central Florida.
After an exciting opening round, a number of players found themselves within striking distance in the Boys 15-19 Division. Players were well aware of the high stakes entering Sunday and that ultimately there could be only one winner. Taking full advantage of that opportunity was Pennsylvania native, Joshua Ryan.
Ryan, who resides in nearby Norristown, PA put together quite the show for Sunday’s final round, shooting a 69 (2-under Par) and earning himself a first-place finish at Hershey CC. Ryan paired his spectacular round two score with his opening score of 77 to earn a 146 total score finish. By earning top honors for the first time in an IJGT event, Ryan also punched his ticket for the Faldo Series U.S. Grand Final and will be competiting in the Boys U-16 Division.
Following behind Ryan in a two-way tie for second are Will Knauth and Alec Ryden. Knauth, who is from Williamsport, PA, had a very consistent weekend with scores of 78 and 78 for a 156 total finish. Alec Ryden, of Moorestown, NJ, had a solid weekend as well with scores of 77 and 79 for a 156 total finish as well.
For the Girls Division, it was another impressive display over the weekend as Mary Kate Norcross was able to take home top honors once again at Hershey. Norcross is a nearby resident of Chambersburg, and takes home first-place as well as a guaranteed spot in the Faldo Series U.S. Grand Final later this year.
Norcross played well throughout the weekend as she put together scores of 78 and 86 for a 164 total score.
Following her in second-place is Kayleigh Zeman of Silver Spring, MD. Zeman, who earned her invitation to the U.S. Grand Final at the Pennsylvania Championship at White Manor, put together a weekend with scores of 89 and 88 for a 177 total score. Rounding out the top-three and sharing the honor are Julianne Lee and Jessica McClellan. Lee, who resides in nearby York, PA, earned scores of 95 and 89 for the weekend event. McClellan, who also hails from Pennsylvania in the town of Freeland, also finished off the weekend with scores of 95 and 89 as well.
The drama was indeed saved best for last at Hershey over the weekend, as a sudden-death playoff was forced in the Boys 14 & Under division between two great young players, Derek Mcglaughlin and Lorenzo Sanz. After each finishing with scores of Par on the first two playoff holes, Mcglaughlin was able to hang on and secure the victory for the weekend by making Par again.
Mcglaughlin, who resides locally in Elizabethtown, PA, had a solid weekend of scores shooting 84 each round to earn himself a total score of 168.
Lorenzo Sanz takes home second-place for the weekend after also shooting scores of 84 each round at Hershey CC. Sanz, of Glen Arm, MD, has now earned himself consecutive top-three finishes in his first two IJGT events of 2018.
